About BSA (Swinton) Short Mat Bowls Club

It is with Sadness we announce the passing away of Peter Farrow “12 August 2019”, Peter was one of the original Club Members and also donated the Trophy for the High 5s, ( The Peter Farrow Trophy)

If you leave Malton on the B1257 Helmsley road, you will soon pass through the villages of Broughton, Swinton and Amotherby. It is the first letters of these three, (and not a well-known British motor cycle) that Matt Fenwick used to name the club he formed in March 1986.

From 2016 the Club will  field 2 teams in the same division in the New Dales league, So we can expect some friendly rivalry between members when they play each other.

Several members also play regularly for the Ryedale region of the Yorkshire (North) League.

Individual accolades go to Matt & Freda Fenwick who played regularly for the County team in the mid 90’s whilst the late Richard Lund enjoyed a particularly good season in 2004/05 reaching the Semi-Finals of the County Singles and Quarter-Finals of the County Triples with club colleagues Sue Watson and John Coffey. With Sue he was also runner-up in the annual Kirbymisperton Pairs.

Since 1998, the Club has held its own open Triples competition, which was renamed The Richard Lund Memorial Triples. In 2006, we introduced an open Pairs competition whilst in 2008 we took on the job of organising the High Fives from the St. Cuthberts club. In 2016 we took over the running of the County’s Little Cup, This has a unique format of 4 players playing as Singles,Pairs and Triples.

The funding from this has gradually helped us build up a stock of 11 mats. With such assets and a popular capacious venue, the Club is able to play host to the annual County Championships.

In 2018 after much discussion, we decided to move our home Dales League Matches to Ryedale indoor Bowls Club based in Norton.
